Scans are fuzzy. Why?

The raw scan always looks a little bit squishy and dull, event when all your settings have been correct. You can improve contrast by level adjustmend before scanning, but the result will not be overwhelmingly better than without. You have to develop the final picture in post processing. By fine tuning gradation and unsharp masking you will convert the raw scan into a proper image. Anybody who is used to the stunning, clear image quality of modern days top-DSLRs you readjust his expectations. Scanning means Analog-to-Digital-Conversion and this process leads inevitably to some loss of image quality. Due to this reason many stock photo agencys nowadays refuse to take any scans into their portfolio. Digital photography simply produces better results, exceptions are only made for historucal images.
