What edition of the book is the best?
I published the first edition of the book 2005 in germany, an english version followed not much later. Although the selling numbers were quite strong from the very beginning and are still, I never took the bait to just reprint a former edition. It's quite common in the publishing industry, but I simply don't want. I want a good book, that means you have to continually put some effort in it.
A major overhaul for every new edition
Up until now, every new edition - no matter if German, or English - went through a major overhaul. I upgraded the content to match the technical progress, improved the structure and the layout. You can easily see this, when you compare two different editions with each other. Due to this, I would say, you will definitely be better off with the up-to-date edition, than with an older one.
Manufacturers in a state of slumber, early editions still useful
But the wheel of time for the scanning world has been turning quite slowly for the last 5 or so years. The industry and everybody else was so busy with their new DSLR-playthings, that there was not so much improvement. There was some in Software and hardly nothing in Hardware. At least not for the sophisticated, quality conscious user. So you can still take much useful information out of the early editions.
As readers quite often ask me about that, I would advise you this:
a) You already have an older edition of the book
If you have an old edition, keep it. It is still a very big help and contains lots of useful information about scanning, Following the Update-and-Errata section on this website will help you to stay in touch with things that happened after the print, too. No urgent need to buy an additional newer edition. But feel free, if you want, of course ;)
b) You have no book yet and can choose between different editions
Grab the edition that's the newest. Best choice is of course the current edition. Doublecheck this any time at the publisher's websites. It's www.dpunkt.de (Germany) and www.rockynook.com (US).
