You can buy used Scanners - lots of them in very good condition - much cheaper than brand new devices. Some scanners, like Nikon filmscanners or most drumscanners you have to buy used, as manufacturers stopped production. The internet is the best place for a good buy. Apart from eBay there is some other online marketplaces worth a look, especially if you are interested in high-end scanners.
Before placing a bid you should consider this: Scanner are sensitive devices, that need proper treatment to keep their functionality. Rude handling will take it's toll, and intensive use is not good for mechanics, too. Apart from that scanners tend to collect dust in their interior. That means after some years they will probably need a pit stop at the manufacturer's repair shop. For Nikon this can cost a hefty 150-200 $. In this case you will save not much by buying an older device. My advice would be: Buy scanners only when they are in good condition, otherwise consider buying a new one.
